When it comes to creating time-lapse movies, there is plenty of misleading information around the web suggesting that it’s not possible in Aperture, and that you need to use a third-party app or plug-in. Thankfully, this isn’t the case, and Aperture has a simple tool that will help you create fantastic movies in no time at all.
Of course, in order for this to work well you will need a series of photos. The best option here is to set up a camera on a tripod and set your camera to take a snap every thirty seconds or so. Remember that if you’re shooting a sunset or sunrise, the lighting will change between the first and last shots. Make sure your camera is set up to get a good range of colours in both lighting situations, and keep the settings the same throughout.
Step 1: Select photos
In Aperture, create a new project using your time-lapse photos. Make sure they are the correct sequence (they will be named by the camera) and select them all with Cmd+A.
Step 2: New slideshow
With all the photos selected, click the New button in the toolbar and choose the Slideshow option. This will be added to the Library tab in the Inspector on the left-hand side.
Step 3: Theming
Before you can edit the settings, you’ll need to choose a theme for your slideshow. For the time-lapse effect to work, you’ll need to use the Classic option and hit Choose Theme.
Step 4: Display settings
Your shots will be laid out automatically, but by default, the settings are set up for a normal slideshow. Hit the button in the bottom-right to open the Display settings panel.
Step 5: Slide Time
First, you’ll need to reduce the slide duration to give a fast-forward-style effect in your time-lapse. Change it from the standard three seconds to a much speedier 0.1 seconds.
Step 6: Adjust transition
First, check that the selected transition type is Dissolve. The default of 0.5 seconds won’t work with the shorter slide duration we’ve set, so double-click and type in 0.05.
Step 7: Fit or fill?
You also need to decide how your slides should look. You can choose to view the whole shot, or fill the frame – choose which works best depending on the size of the photos.
Step 8: No titles
There are a few options that will also let you add a title to your slideshow, but it will only show for one slide, so either choose no titles, or extend the first slide.
Step 9: Add a soundtrack
Finally, you can choose whether or not to add a soundtrack to your slideshow. Hit the music button in the bottom-left and choose from the default tracks or your iTunes library.
